What are you looking for?

If you learned on guards, the first guard-free fade is going to feel wrong. That is normal. Here is how to get through the first week.

The FlairBlade runs 0A to #1½ on the lever. Your whole low-to-mid transition lives on one blade. No attachment combs, no swapping, no rebuilding the fade in steps.

Learn the lever by feel, not by looking

Before you touch a head, sit with the machine and run the lever through its full travel twenty times. Closed. Open. Halfway. Find the stops with your thumb.

You need to be able to move that lever without looking at it. That is the skill the whole technique sits on. A barber who has to glance down every time is slower with this blade than he was with guards — and that is the guy who decides it does not work.

Twenty minutes with the machine in your hand, before your first client. It is worth it.

Set your baseline first

Lever fully closed. Establish your lowest point and your guideline exactly where you always would.

Nothing changes here. Same baseline, same corners, same read on the head. The blade only changes how you get from the baseline up.

Open as you climb

Here is the part that replaces everything you knew about guard fading.

Instead of clipping on a #1, cutting a section, clipping on a #1½, cutting the next section — you make one pass and open the lever as your hand travels up the head. The length changes continuously, under your thumb, while the blade is still cutting.

The transition does not get blended afterward. It gets created as you cut it.

Start slow. Genuinely slow — slower than feels productive. You are training your thumb and your wrist to move at different rates at the same time, and that coordination takes a few heads. Speed shows up on its own by the fourth or fifth client. Chasing it on the first one just gives you lines to fix.

The part nobody tells you

Stop reaching for the blending shears.

Your hand is going to want to. Twenty years of muscle memory says a fade is not finished until you have gone back over the transition and erased the steps. But there are no steps. You never created one. Going back over a lever-cut transition does not clean it — it takes out length that was supposed to be there and puts a hollow in the fade.

Cut it. Look at it. Leave it alone.

That is the hardest instruction on this page and it is the one that decides whether guard-free works for you.

When it looks wrong

A visible line where the transition should be. You opened the lever in a jump instead of a sweep. The thumb stopped while the hand kept moving. Slow the pass down.

The top of the fade is too short. You did not open far enough before you ran out of head. Start opening earlier and lower than feels right.

Patchy through the middle. Inconsistent pressure, not inconsistent lever. Let the blade sit on the head — do not push it in.

What you actually get out of it

Fewer passes. Almost no blending. A fade that holds its shape as it grows out, because the length change is continuous instead of stepped.

And the man is out of the cape sooner, which — over a full Saturday — is the difference between a good day and a great one.

Nobody made him look like that but you. We just make the blade.
